- SECTION 1 - WELCOME

- Welcome to MonitorIT from Breakout Software!
- MonitorIT is an extremely powerful tool that offers
- monitoring, alerting, analysis and reporting for any
- OS based server and network device via SNMP. And for
- your Windows(R)-based servers, workstations, and
- desktops, MonitorIT provides unparalleled performance
- monitoring, alerting, reporting and analysis.

- We recommend that you take some time to learn
- about the wealth of capabilities MonitorIT offers.
- Proper utilization of MonitorIT's extensive features
- will help you acquire invaluable information and
- insight about the systems and networks you
- manage or support.

- Because MonitorIT has the ability to monitor and
- analyze a vast amount of performance information,
- we suggest that you begin using MonitorIT's basic
- features. Once you understand how the product
- works and you begin to reap the benefits it provides,
- you can expand your use to the advanced features.

- SECTION 2 - SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
-
-
- MonitorIT is comprised of two software components:
- the Server component and the optional Agent
- component.
-
- The Server component enables access to real-time
- and historical information about operational and
- performance aspects for all systems and devices
- being monitored. Administration, active graphing,
- reporting, analysis, SNMP monitoring and alert
- features are managed by the Server component.
-
- The Agent component is optionally installed on each
- Windows based server, workstation and desktop for
- detailed Counter monitoring and on NT/2000/XP
- systems, for Event Log, Services and File monitoring.
-
- These are MINIMUM requirements:
-
- SERVER:
-
- * Pentium II Processor
- * 128 MB of RAM
- * 8 MB of hard disk space for program files
- * 32+ MB of hard disk space for the database
- * VGA video resolution
- * Windows 98/ME, or NT 4.0/2000 operating system
- * TCP/IP network connection
- * Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or greater
- * Static IP address
- * 32-bit ODBC (installed by MonitorIT setup)

- When Agents Are Involved:
-
- Recommended MINIMUM Server Requirements per
- Number of Agents used in Monitoring:

- 1 - 10 Agents
- * 128 MB RAM
- * 1 GB hard disk space
- * 333 MHz processor

- 11 - 25 Agents
- * 128 to 256 MB RAM
- * 2 to 4 GB hard disk space
- * 600 MHz processor

- 26+ Agents
- * 512 MB to 1GB RAM
- * 4 or more GB hard disk space
- * 800 MHz processor or greater
- * Larger DBMS system (MS-SQL Server 7)
- (To load balance, it is recommended that
- SQL Server is installed on a different
- server)

- When Agents Are Not Involved:

- General Server/Service Availability (based
- upon 3 minute interval polling):

- (much depends upon how long you maintain
- database history)
- * 800 Mhz processor or greater
- * It's worthwhile to consider SQL Server installed
- on a different server.

- (more if sometimes connected)

- ADMIN/ANALYST CONSOLE:

- This is the Windows based computer you use as the
- MonitorIT "console" to access the MonitorIT Server
- anytime, anywhere.

- * Pentium Processor
- * 32 MB of RAM (64 recommended)
- * 5 MB of hard disk space for the ActiveX controls
- * 1024 x 768 minimum resolution.
- 1280 x 1024 recommended
- * > 256 video color
- * Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or greater

- SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
-
-
- Installing The MonitorIT Server
- ________________________________
-
- The setup program will install the MonitorIT Server and
- Agent applications on the computer you want to be
- designated as the MonitorIT Server computer.
-
- *** Important Note:
- If you will be using Microsoft's SQL Server, and if
- the SQL Server and database will reside on a
- different computer, please read the information in
- the MonitorIT User's Guide before continuing.
-
- 1. Exit all programs before installing MonitorIT.
-
- 2. To install MonitorIT, simply run:
- Setup_MonitorIT.exe.
-
- Note: If your system does not meet MonitorIT
- requirements, it will notify you of each aspect
- throughout installation.
-
- 3. You will see the MonitorIT Welcome Screen.
- Click Next.
-
- 4. Now you are brought to the License Agreement.
- Click Yes if you agree to the terms of the agreement.
- Click No to exit MonitorIT setup.
-
- 5. This Read Me file will be displayed (it is also
- accessible prior to installation). Read through the
- notes and click Next to continue.
-
- 6. MonitorIT will provide a default directory for
- installation, which is C:\Program Files\MonitorIT.
- If you wish to change this directory, click Browse
- to choose a different folder. Choose Next continue.
-
- 7. MonitorIT will determine whether you have enough free
- disk space to install the program. If you do not, then
- you must choose another drive or create enough space
- for the program.
-
- 8. MonitorIT will ask to create the Program folder for you.
- Click Yes.
-
- 9. The next screen provides you with some various
- configuration and startup options. The options are
- as follows:
-
- - Add Server shortcut to the desktop
- - Automatically start the Server on boot
-
- By default, the first option is checked. Select the
- options you wish to have, and choose Next.
-
- 10. MonitorIT will display a summary page so that you
- may review your installation options and settings.
- Take a moment to read through them. You can
- change any of the settings by clicking on the Back
- button and returning to the appropriate dialog to
- make changes. Click Next to return to the
- summary page. Once you have determined your
- settings, click Next. MonitorIT will copy the
- necessary program files to your system.

- 11. When MonitorIT has finished installing all the
- necessary files, you will be brought to a screen
- to perform Electronic Registration. click Finish
- when done.

- 12. After MonitorIT has finished, it may ask you if
- you wish to Restart your computer. Restart the
- computer, and you may now begin to use the product.

- Installing The MonitorIT Agent (Optional for Counter
- and Event Log monitoring of Windows based systems)

- 1. The recommended method for installing Agents on
- Windows NT/2000/XP servers & workstations is by
- using the Mange Agent function to 'push' the
- Agents, install the Agent service, and start the
- service.
-
- 2. Alternatively, at the Windows server,workstation,
- or desktop that you want to Counter monitor or
- Event Log monitor, run Internet Explorer version 5
- or higher and connect to the MonitorIT Server
- computer using the following URL,
-
- http://xx.xx.xx.xx:81/InstallAgent.asp
-
- where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address of the
- MonitorIT Server computer.
-
- If you currently use a remote control program such
- as pcAnywhere, CoSession or Terminal Server, you can
- use it to connect to the Windows computer to run IE
- and connect to the MonitorIT Server.
-

- 3. When you connect to the above URL on the
- MonitorIT Server, you will be prompted to confirm the
- download of the MonitorIT Agent software. Press the
- OK button, and the MonitorIT Agent software
- will be downloaded and installed. As part of this
- process, it will load the MonitorIT Agent and automatically
- register the computer with the MonitorIT Server.

- To remove the MonitorIT Agent from a client PC, follow
- the directions above but change the name of the page
- to UninstallAgent.asp. Example:

- MonitorIT comes with a variety of electronic
- documentation:

- 2. MonitorIT User's Guide: This manual
- provides the detailed information on
- using MonitorIT in a single PDF document
- that can be printed. It is available from the
- Start menu in the Programs->MonitorIT folder.

- 3. Online Help: Clicking the 'Question Mark'
- icon, located in the upper right hand corner,
- from within the MonitorIT or Internet Explorer
- browser will bring up context sensitive
- Online help. See in particular, "First Time
- User Steps", for steps to get up and running
- smoothly.

- SECTION 5 - PRODUCT LIMITATIONS & TECHNICAL NOTES
-

- PRODUCT LIMITATIONS
- -----------------------------------------
- 1. While MonitorIT has been designed to support
- any ODBC-compliant database, only
- MS-Access Jet and MS-SQL Server Version 7 & 2000
- have been tested for full support at this time.
- Future versions of MonitorIT may add support for
- Oracle and DB2 databases.

- 2. There is a limit of 16 counters that may be placed
- onto a chart.
-
- 3. Frequent database compactions, and the deletion
- of records older than required is available from the
- database maintenance Web interface. This is
- recommended to increase or maintain database
- performance.

- The following resource information will help you obtain the
- required software to use MonitorIT.

- 1. MDAC
- Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) is a setup program
- provided by Microsoft as part of the DAO SDK for
- redistributing ODBC, Jet, and other database access
- technologies. MonitorIT requires that MDAC be installed on
- the MonitorIT Server computer. The MonitorIT setup program
- includes MDAC and automatically launches the MDAC 2.0 setup
- program if it does not find the redistributable files for
- ODBC and Jet in the System folder.
