  31. SECTION 1 - WELCOME

  34. Welcome to MonitorIT from Breakout Software! 
  35. MonitorIT is an extremely powerful tool that offers 
  36. monitoring, alerting, analysis and reporting  for any 
  37. OS based server and network device via SNMP.  And for 
  38. your Windows(R)-based servers, workstations, and 
  39. desktops, MonitorIT provides unparalleled performance 
  40. monitoring, alerting, reporting and analysis.

  42. We recommend that you take some time to learn 
  43. about the wealth of capabilities MonitorIT offers.  
  44. Proper utilization of MonitorIT's extensive features 
  45. will help you acquire invaluable information and 
  46. insight about the systems and networks you 
  47. manage or support.

  49. Because MonitorIT has the ability to monitor and 
  50. analyze a vast amount of performance information, 
  51. we suggest that you begin using MonitorIT's basic 
  52. features.  Once you understand how the product 
  53. works and you begin to reap the benefits it provides, 
  54. you can expand your use to the advanced features.

  59. SECTION 2 - SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  60.

  62. MonitorIT is comprised of two software components: 
  63. the Server component and the optional Agent 
  64. component.  
  65.  
  66. The Server component enables access to real-time 
  67. and historical information about operational and 
  68. performance aspects for all  systems and devices
  69. being monitored. Administration, active graphing, 
  70. reporting, analysis, SNMP monitoring and alert 
  71. features are managed by the Server component.
  72.  
  73. The Agent component is optionally  installed on each 
  74. Windows based server, workstation and desktop for
  75. detailed Counter monitoring and on NT/2000/XP
  76. systems, for Event Log, Services and File monitoring.

  78. These are MINIMUM requirements:

  83.     *  128 MB of RAM
  84.     *  8 MB of hard disk space for program files
  85.     *  32+ MB of hard disk space for the database
  86.     *  VGA video resolution
  87.     *  Windows 98/ME, or NT 4.0/2000 operating system
  88.     *  TCP/IP network connection
  89.      *  Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or greater
  90.     *  Static IP address
  91.     *  32-bit ODBC (installed by MonitorIT setup)

  156.     This is the Windows based computer you use as the
  157.     MonitorIT "console" to access the MonitorIT Server
  158.     anytime, anywhere.

  162.     *  5 MB of hard disk space for the ActiveX controls
  163.     *  1024 x 768 minimum resolution.  
  164.        1280 x 1024 recommended

  170. SECTION 3 - INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
  171.  
  172.  
  173. Installing The MonitorIT Server
  174. ________________________________
  175.  
  176. The setup program will install the MonitorIT Server and 
  177. Agent applications on the computer you want to be 
  178. designated as the MonitorIT Server computer.
  179.  
  180. *** Important Note:
  181. If you will be using Microsoft's SQL Server, and if
  182. the SQL Server and database will reside on a 
  183. different computer, please read the information in 
  184. the MonitorIT User's Guide  before continuing.
  185.  
  186. 1.  Exit all programs before installing MonitorIT.
  187.  
  188. 2.  To install MonitorIT, simply run:
  189.          Setup_MonitorIT.exe.
  190.  
  191.     Note: If your system does not meet MonitorIT 
  192.     requirements, it will notify you of each aspect 
  193.     throughout installation.
  194.  
  195. 3.  You will see the MonitorIT Welcome Screen.  
  196.     Click Next.
  197.  
  198. 4.  Now you are brought to the License Agreement.  
  199.     Click Yes if you agree to the terms of the agreement.  
  200.     Click No to exit MonitorIT setup.
  201.  
  202. 5.  This Read Me file will be displayed (it is also 
  203.     accessible prior to installation).  Read through the
  204.     notes and click Next to continue.
  205.  
  206. 6.  MonitorIT will provide a default directory for 
  207.     installation, which is C:\Program Files\MonitorIT.  
  208.     If you wish to change this directory, click Browse
  209.     to choose a different folder.  Choose Next continue.
  210.  
  211. 7.  MonitorIT will determine whether you have enough free 
  212.     disk space to install the program.  If you do not, then 
  213.     you must choose another drive or create enough space
  214.     for the program.
  215.  
  216. 8.  MonitorIT will ask to create the Program folder for you.  
  217.     Click Yes.
  218.  
  219. 9.  The next screen provides you with some various 
  220.     configuration and startup options.  The options are 
  221.     as follows:
  222.  
  223.       - Add Server shortcut to the desktop
  224.       - Automatically start the Server on boot
  225.  
  226.     By default, the first option is checked.  Select the
  227.     options you wish to have, and choose Next.
  228.  
  229. 10. MonitorIT will display a summary page so that you 
  230.     may review your installation options and settings.  
  231.     Take a moment to read through them.  You can 
  232.     change any of the settings by clicking on the Back
  233.     button and returning to the appropriate dialog to 
  234.     make changes.  Click Next to return to the
  235.     summary page.  Once you have determined your 
  236.     settings, click Next.  MonitorIT will copy the 
  237.     necessary program files to your system.
  238.  
  239. 11. When MonitorIT has finished installing all the 
  240.     necessary files, you will be brought to a screen 
  241.     to perform Electronic Registration.  click Finish
  242.     when done.
  243.     
  244. 12. After MonitorIT has finished, it may ask you if 
  245.     you wish to Restart your computer.  Restart the 
  246.     computer, and you may now begin to use the product.

  249. Installing The MonitorIT Agent (Optional for Counter
  250. and Event Log monitoring of Windows based systems)
  251. _____________________________________________

  253. 1.  The recommended method for installing Agents on
  254.     Windows NT/2000/XP servers & workstations is by
  255.     using the Mange Agent function to 'push' the
  256.     Agents, install the Agent service, and start the
  257.     service. 
  258.  
  259. 2.  Alternatively, at the Windows server,workstation, 
  260.     or desktop that you want to Counter monitor or 
  261.     Event Log monitor, run Internet Explorer version 5
  262.     or higher and connect to the MonitorIT Server 
  263.     computer using the following URL, 
  264.  
  265.     http://xx.xx.xx.xx:81/InstallAgent.asp
  266.      
  267.     where xx.xx.xx.xx is the IP address of the 
  268.     MonitorIT Server computer.
  269.  
  270.     If you currently use a remote control program such 
  271.     as pcAnywhere, CoSession or Terminal Server, you can 
  272.     use it to connect to the Windows computer to run IE 
  273.     and connect to the MonitorIT Server.
  274.  
  275.  
  276. 3.  When you connect to the above URL on the 
  277.     MonitorIT Server, you will be prompted to confirm the 
  278.     download of the MonitorIT Agent software.  Press the 
  279.     OK button, and the MonitorIT Agent software
  280.     will be downloaded and installed.  As part of this 
  281.     process, it will load the MonitorIT Agent and automatically 
  282.     register the computer with the MonitorIT Server.

  284. To remove the MonitorIT Agent from a client PC, follow
  285. the directions above but change the name of the page
  286. to UninstallAgent.asp.  Example:

  301.       provides the detailed information on 
  302.       using MonitorIT in a single PDF document
  303.       that can be printed.  It is available from the 
  304.       Start menu in the Programs->MonitorIT folder.

  307.   3.  Online Help: Clicking the 'Question Mark' 
  308.       icon, located in the upper right hand corner, 
  309.       from within the MonitorIT or Internet Explorer 
  310.       browser will bring up context sensitive 
  311.       Online help.  See in particular, "First Time
  312.       User Steps", for steps to get up and running
  313.       smoothly.

  317. SECTION 5 - PRODUCT LIMITATIONS & TECHNICAL NOTES
  318.

  320. PRODUCT LIMITATIONS 
  321. -----------------------------------------
  322.  1. While MonitorIT has been designed to support 
  323.      any ODBC-compliant database, only 
  324.      MS-Access Jet and MS-SQL Server Version 7 & 2000
  325.      have been tested for full support at this  time.  
  326.      Future versions of MonitorIT may add support for 
  327.      Oracle and DB2 databases.
  328.  
  329.  2. There is a limit of 16 counters that may be placed 
  330.      onto a chart.
  331.  
  332.  3. Frequent database compactions, and the deletion
  333.      of records older than required is available from the
  334.      database maintenance Web interface. This is 
  335.      recommended to increase or maintain database 
  336.      performance.

  343. The following resource information will help you obtain the 
  344. required software to use MonitorIT.

  346.   1.  MDAC
  347.       Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) is a setup program 
  348.       provided by Microsoft as part of the DAO SDK for 
  349.       redistributing ODBC, Jet, and other database access
  350.       technologies.  MonitorIT requires that MDAC be installed on
  351.       the MonitorIT Server computer.  The MonitorIT setup program
  352.       includes MDAC and automatically launches the MDAC 2.0 setup
  353.       program if it does not find the redistributable files for 
  354.       ODBC and Jet in the System folder.
